Europe…the Caribbean…Destin, Florida. Everyone has a different region of the world where they want to travel to. Decide on what’s most important for you and your group, and narrow down the region/area in which you are looking to begin comparing rental properties.
By now, you know the region you are going. For this sake, we’ll establish that you have decided on the Destin, Florida region. Next, is to set a budget that works for your group. Be mindful of season rate changes (high versus low season, holidays, special events, etc.). Ask yourself if you are prepared to stay off the beach to stay within budget or if finding something on the water is vital to you. This will help you once you start looking into the 10,000 rental options our area has.
Third on the checklist is prioritizing your needs in a vacation space. Do you like the beach? How about something a little more quiet on the Bay? Here for a conference…perhaps you need something where you can quickly walk to your conference at 7am every morning. Travelling with small kids where the thought of staying near Sandestin’s Village of Baytowne Wharf makes vacation seem so much easier to handle? Research the area and write a list of things that would make your trip the best one. Consider the need of a walk-in shower for your elderly parents or even tubs to bathe the kids in. Are stainless steel appliances a must? This checklist item can cover a lot of ground, but we strongly suggest writing down a list of your top 3-5 needs before you begin pin pointing properties so you don’t overwhelm yourself with “wants” over “needs.”
Almost as equally important as #3 is deciding on what type of property you want to stay in. Oftentimes, you can get a vacation rental condo or house with most of the comforts of back home for a better price than a hotel …. or a more economical price considering most vacation properties have a kitchen, washer/dryer, etc. Large groups tend to book houses or multiple condos while small families have the decision of staying in a 1 bedroom with a sofa sleeper or allowing the kids to have their own room in a 2 bedroom. Determining your group’s needs and space requirements can be very helpful unless you are completely flexible!
You can use the major listing sites that you are used to, but beware that sending an inquiry through these sites can require you to book direct and pay an additional 10-20% than what you would pay if you found the Owner/Property Manager direct. Search and take notes. Keep yourself very organized so you don’t confuse and overwhelm yourself. It’s touch searching through so many listings…we understand! Look for an Owner’s name or Property Management company logo/name on the listings. You can also look for the condo/house name (we love punny names in Destin – everyone names everything!). Search (we suggest Google) these names to try to connect directly for the best rate.
Receive true local recommendations – the best seafood, most trustworthy boat rentals, deep sea fishing, and more – something a non-GBR staff member can’t answer.
Use discount codes – other listing sites don’t let you save when you are a repeat renter, Florida resident, military or emergency personnel.
Save 10-20% right off the bat! Listing sites charge you extra fees to book on their site. They preach added benefits but in reality, the property manager is the one who takes care of you when something is wrong.
Deal directly with the people who care for the property. More often than not, we encounter exhausted, confused travelers who were told something by an agent who is not at all affiliated with GBR. This can sometimes be misleading and frustrating when a 3rd party agent answers a question incorrectly. When you book direct, your dealings will always be with a local, true team member of GBR so you know the information you receive is accurate and easy to interpret.
Your chance of being scammed is greatly reduced. With so many different marketing sites out there on the web, it’s so easy for scammers to create fake listings and steal your money. Normally the repercussions on these folks is non-existent resulting in a terrible experience for the traveler. When guests book direct, you have the opportunity to email us, call us, search for us on social media, and visit our direct website to quadruple check that we are real people who aren’t in business to take advantage of you. Be careful out there on those listings sites!
