Exploring Hwy 30A
If you’ve done any research in the Destin, Florida area, you’ve probably come across 30A at some point and wondered – What is that, exactly? Today we’re going to let you in on that secret – Exploring Hwy 30A.
Well, outside of what’s become an iconic brand around here and all over the south, it truly boils down to one thing: Hwy 30A that runs along the Gulf Coast between Destin and Panama City Beach. With a variety of small communities along this highway, it’s another must do on your visit to Destin, Florida. In this two part series, we will run down all the communities and things to do if you choose to take a day to see it all.
First up on the stop down Hwy 30A is Gulf Place. One stop sign is all this community needs, with the beach on one side and town center on the other. Restaurants and shops line the ground level of this community area, with condos and housing above them. Here you can walk around to shop, visit Gulf Place’s newest tenant Shunk Gully 30A for some oysters, or have a drink at La Playa outside across from the water. We happen to love Growler Garage too if you’re looking for a pet friendly place with craft beer.
Moving on down 30A is Blue Mountain Beach – a laid back area with 60s era beach cottages and modern waterfront mansions. Grab some ice cream from Blue Mountain Beach Creamery before heading to the Beach Access to explore the sand.
The next stop is Grayton Beach – Filled with history and laid back beach vibes, this tiny beach town is full of adventures. Stop by the shops of Grayton to browse galleries of local artists, or swing over to the beach side and stop for a drink at Red Bar or Chiringo. AJs in Grayton Beach has live music most nights, or head over to Craft Bar 30A nearby for a more upscale bar. Flip flops are the dress code in this community, and that’s how we like it.

Slightly down the highway, you’ll come across Grayton Beach State Park, a true place of adventure for the outdoorsy. You can camp, hike, and just plain explore the park and all it’s natural beauty on your own. This is a hot spot for photographers doing family portrait sessions, so time your visit before sunset to avoid the rush.
