A Week at the Beach: What to Do Every Day

Beach weeks have a way of flying by. You blink, and it’s checkout day, and you’re not sure where the time went. We’ve come up with an itinerary that is designed to fix just that, not by overscheduling you, but by giving you each day a little direction so you actually do the things you came here to do. Some days are packed with activities. Others are basically “sit by the water and do nothing,” which is a completely valid plan.
A Miramar Beach vacation rental is the move if you haven’t booked yet. There’s something about having your own place with a kitchen, space for the whole family, and somewhere to come back to at the end of the day to relax. That’s what makes the whole trip feel more like home. Ready? Here’s your day-by-day plan for the best beach week yet.
Day 1: Arrive and Actually Relax

One thing many families don’t realize is that they try to do too much on arrival day. This year, get checked in, unpack your bags, and go outside. Have lunch at a laid-back beach spot that’s not fancy, just good food near the water. Spend the afternoon at the beach with nothing on your to-do list. Swim, take a nap, read on the beach under an umbrella, listen to the waves; do whatever sounds good to you. In the evening, take a walk at sunset and have an easy dinner at your vacation rental. That’s the whole plan, and it’s a great one that will start your family vacation off right.
Quick tip: Grab groceries on your way to your vacation rental. One of the best things about staying in one of our vacation rentals is having your own kitchen. So, stock up on breakfast stuff, snacks, and ingredients for lunches and dinner. Grabbing them early will help save money in the long run.
Day 2: Spend the Day in the Water
One of the best ways to enjoy the beach is to get there early. The crowds are smaller, the water is usually calmer, and the cooler morning temperatures make it a great time for the kids to play in the surf. Most beach rental companies are open by then, too, so it’s easy to grab kayaks, paddleboards, and boogie boards before heading out for the day. Once you’ve burned enough energy in the morning, pack a cooler with sandwiches or subs, chips, and a small dessert for the family to enjoy while still at the beach. Rent kayaks or paddleboards in the afternoon, then treat your family to a sit-down dinner at a local restaurant. You’ve earned it.
Quick tip: Call ahead to reserve kayaks, paddleboards, or lessons, as slots fill up quickly in the summer months.
Day 3: Get Off the Beach for a Bit

Instead of heading to the beach this morning, spend it by seeing what the town has to offer. There are farmers’ markets, local shops, the little gallery you keep walking by, and this is the day for it. Skip the big chain stores and look for places that are only available here. If you’re looking for a hidden gem restaurant, ask a local where to go. They will often send you to one of their favorite restaurants to check out, or to the place with the best coffee in the area. In the afternoon, after lunch, head to the beach and find some tidal pools for the kids to play in at low tide. End the night with ice cream and stargazing.
Quick tip: Be sure to check the local tide chart the night before so you know when to head to the tidal pools at low tide. That’s when you’ll find some of the best things in there, from shells to even hermit crabs.
Day 4: Do Absolutely Nothing (Seriously)
This day is one of the best days that you can have on your vacation. Don’t set an alarm. Sleep in if you can, make coffee, and sit outside. This is a slow day, and it’s not optional; every good beach week needs at least one. Set up on the beach with a book, or enjoy the pool at your rental, with a cold drink in your hand. Take a nap, swim whenever you’d like, and if you want something a little more relaxing, head to a local spa for a massage. In the evening, try fishing off the local pier; you don’t need to catch anything. The whole point is to do nothing urgent today. For dinner, cook something easy that the whole family will love and go to bed happy.
Day 5: See More of Where You Are
On day 5, it’s time to see more of where you are. Go for a coastal trail hike in the morning before the afternoon heat sets in. The views are worth it, and there’s rarely a crowd if you go that early. Rent bikes and cruise along the coastline, and it’s one of the best ways to find spots you’d never find if you drive. Pack a lunch and eat somewhere that has a good view. In the afternoon, take a boat tour or spend time at the marina looking for dolphins. A boat tour typically lasts a few hours and is what people talk about when they go home. For those who didn’t bring the kids on this vacation, finding a place with a water view for happy hour is a great way to finish off their day.
Day 6: Make it a Family Fun Day

Did you bring the whole family with you on this vacation? If the answer is yes, make today a family-fun day on the trip. Get everyone together for beach volleyball, throw a frisbee, and have a sandcastle contest that you can keep it fun, keep it friendly, and maybe don’t take it too seriously. For lunch, have a cookout with everyone back at your vacation rental, then spend the afternoon hanging out by the water. In the evening, walk along the beach and take in the sunset. This can be a simple day, but honestly, make it what you want it to be.
Day 7: Make the Last Morning Count
It’s a sad day for you as you will most likely be checking out soon and heading back home, but before you leave, watch the sunrise one last time, sipping on your coffee with the family. Before you start packing things up, go pick up a quick breakfast for everyone, and spend the morning soaking it all in. No matter how you spend your morning before checking out, take time to remember everything that you did over the past week. And just like that, it’s time to head home.
One Last Thing
The best beach trips aren’t the ones where everything went perfectly according to your plans. They’re the ones where you put your phone down, and yes to all the things the family wants to do. Leave enough room for the unexpected. That’s usually where the good stuff happens.
